Kennilworth Kickboxing
"The female course was a prime example of building resilience, mental wellbeing and team work"
During the summer term 2023, the Kennilworth Centre Youth Team ran a six week pilot kickboxing course, partnering with Hussars Martial Arts Gym in Kenilworth as part of our short courses programme.
We ran a pilot program where `14 young people aged 12+ accessed a 6 week introduction to Kickboxing/Muay Thai course. The course was developed to introduce teenagers into the world of Kickboxing/Muay Thai with the aim of building an understanding of appropriate uses of violence and the extent to which it is acceptable.
Participants were taught to respect the culture and tradition of the sport, each other, the coaches, and all involved. The course allowed for a safe outlet for any frustrations that participants might have been carrying as well as a space to channel youthful energy into something productive rather than antisocial behaviour.
The funding enabled us to hire the venue, equipment and keep registration costs low. We were able to offer free places on all three courses to participants who requested financial support.
The kickboxing school has as a result of delivering the female only course, developed a safe space and time for young females to practice.
A positive response from all participates indicated an increased fitness level and confidence, as well as offering them new social connections. Feedback from parents was also overwhelmingly positive, with parents also noticing an improvement in their child's fitness levels and self control.
